Some days are just a lot harder than others. Cheyenne called after taking Lance to school to tell is that Lance got caught in the door of the city bus. There was a group of Jr. High kids getting off in front of them so she put Lance in front of her, but behind the kids. The bus driver suddenly took off, closing the door on Lance's arm. Fortunately, Lance was still inside, as was Cheyenne. Another lady screamed at the top of her lungs at the bus driver and he stopped and let them off. Cheyenne had purposely put herself behind Lance in case the driver could not see Lance. However, he didn't bother to look. When he felt they had stopped long enough, he took off without even checking to see if the passage door was clear. Cheyenne was a little more than shook up. Some of the routes here are famous for such careless driving, often killing dozens of people a year.
After calling us to update us, she told us the neighbor, Reina, took her in, sat her down and made her drink a Coke to calm her down. After sitting and calming down for a while, she started back to her house, two doors away. She noticed that the husband and his father of the couple next door to her were quite upset, actually uncontrollably, and she finally approached the father and asked what was going on. He finally got out that the wife had been killed yesterday morning. Cheyenne asked if it were a wreck and he said no, that they killed her. She was 28, and they had gotten married less than a year ago. She was also the niece of Ramiro and Arturo in our church. When they moved next door, Cheyenne chatted with them and the girl commented that she had seen her signing. Cheyenne explained that we work with the deaf and she proclaimed that her two uncles were deaf. Putting two and two together, they realized that we all know the whole family (brothers and sisters of Ramiro and Arturo) and many of the cousins. Ramiro came and asked directions of us of how they could get to their wedding less than a year ago. Everyone laughed at how we all crossed paths so closely and yet did not know each other.
Cheyenne says that the couple was the pride of the neighborhood because they were so devoted and cute together. She was on a street close to Cheyenne's house on her way to work when someone strangled her in her car and then apparently shot her in the head. There are no clues as to why, what, who or how. She definitely was not a druggie and brought this on herself. So within minutes of getting back from the bus scare, Cheyenne was confronted with the tragic murder of her next door neighbor (and family of close friends). You might whisper a special prayer for Cheyenne this morning. She was really shook up over the bus issue and then a second big blow within minutes. Thank you for caring.
