Safe Trip

Have you ever driven through a Category 2 hurricane 2 hours before landfall? We really didn't plan to either. As you are aware, our vehicle permits were expiring and a long chain of events disrupted our schedule to the max. We fixed a heavy tarp over our patio on Monday which probably saved our washer and dryer yesterday. That caused a one day delay in our leaving. Tuesday caused another change of scheduling as the hurricane was originally scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon/evening.  No trouble. We could easily slip out Wednesday and be settled in before the hurricane set in. Tuesday afternoon they cut 12 hours off the arrival time. Now we are looking at Wednesday Midnight as landfall.Since the border would be 12-14 hours away, we prayed and felt the Lord led us to depart early Wednesday with a mad rush to get out before the hurricane hit.
As it turned out, landfall was another 4 hours less than what had been predicted. We traveled through San Fernando, today listed as the closest city to landfall, a mere two hours before that occurrence. It was pretty wild at times but we proceeded carefully and arrived in Texas about 7:00 PM. We checked in at the mission which was already flooding and then decided to head up the valley and find a motel. I was soaked to the bone from opening and closing gates and checking on different information needed. However, we got a hot shower, a clean bed and a hot breakfast. Ann and I are fine, the hurricane is inland, only flooding seems to be what is left (along with more rain). We will have to return to the Mexican border to cancel our papers sometime this weekend. It seems that the offices closed early yesterday for some reason.
We PRAISE GOD for the safe trip. At the same time we were being pounded in northern Mexico, Guadalajara was being drenched by the same phenomenon. At times we were traveling within 10 miles of the coast in a direct line with the eye of the storm. We were not being foolish, we were trying to be careful! By the way, there were no roadblocks or kidnappings or shootouts along our way (just because of a little storm). THANK YOU for praying for your missionaries. God certainly heard your prayers.
Gary & Ann
