Cloud Bursts Over Guadalajara

Psalm 91:1

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

 Dear Praying Friends,

How thankful we are that we have a safe place “under the shadow of the Almighty!” We have plenty of situations where we must say, “Thank you, Lord for protecting us.” Just recently I wrote saying that hopefully the worst of the rainy season has passed. WRONG! Usually, we have a rainy season from June to September. After the Spring storms it usually calms down a we get rainy days until September. Since I wrote, things have gotten much worse. Guadalajara is being flooded in different sections almost daily. This is not the usual flooded streets of two or three inches. Last night, a large part of the city was inundated so much that hundreds of people could not get home, the bus routes could not get through water that was up to the bottom of the trailers on the big trucks. Many spent the night on the seats or floor of the city buses that could not go anywhere. Hundreds were just getting home after daylight this morning due to the extreme flooding.

We have lived here for more than forty years and cannot remember daily disasters such as these. Many folks here depend on their spiritual idols to protect them from floods – after all we are surrounded by large mountains and deep ravines. But our city is actually the foothills of those mountains and therefore is actually of different elevations. Thankfully, we do not depend on articles made by men’s hands, but on an Almighty God. I am reminded of Esther’s plea when facing what seemed to be a terrible disaster, “If I perish, I perish.” But we are still “dwelling in the secret place under the shadow of the Almighty,” even if passing through troubled waters.

Gary goes next week to his rheumatologist for an update on his psoriatic arthritis. We are trusting that the inflammation is much better. He certainly has much better articulation.

September 16th is the Independence Day for Mexico and we look for an uptick in attendance. It certainly won’t be the 76 we had last year due to the heavy rains, the question of if they will be able to get home, but we are looking for opportunities the share the Gospel with additional deaf.

Our church family continues on in the Lord, but growth seems unbearably slow sometimes.

We are teaching Sunday School with lessons on our doctrinal statement. It makes for deep teaching, but we go slow and certainly welcome questions. Pray that this will help mature some of our Christians who lack maturity.

Thank you so much for your prayers, especially in these times. The Devil is at work throughout this country, yet we see God reaching people through the preaching of the Word. May God richly bless you for your faithfulness and your giving.

For DEAF souls in Mexico,

Gary & Ann Layne
